Mobile Phones: The Education Enhancing Tool
(Date tbc)
Mobile phones are not seen as helpful in schools - stories of
'happy slapping' or of mobile use disrupting classes have lead to them being
seen as the antithesis to ideal educational settings. But we may be missing some
of the best things about mobile technology; it offers endless
possibilities for children in school, from discussing and sharing homework
to enabling youngsters to be tech-savvy. This seminar will discuss technological
mobile innovations and how they could help in education. For further
details please contact admin@apmobile.org.uk

March 2003 - Mobiles and Driving: The seminar on mobile phones and driving
was extremely informative and well attended. The Parliamentary Under Secretary
of State with responsibility for Road Safety at the Department for Transport
David Jamieson MP addressed the Group along with Tim Harrabin from Vodafone,
Kevin Clinton from RoSPA and Andrew Howard from the AA. Following the
presentations the debate was opened up to the floor and during the session David
Jamieson MP said that there had been a huge response to the consultation. The
Department has received over 1000 responses. He also indicated that legislation
could be introduced before the summer if it were decided to press ahead with a
ban on hands-held phones. He hinted that a ban on hand-held phones was very
likely, and he also said that there is a relatively compelling case for banning
the use of hands-free phones but that law enforcement issues would need to be
examined before moving ahead. The results of the consultation will be announced
as soon as possible.
